St. George Queensland Reds and McInnes Wilson Lawyers Brisbane City backrower Jake Schatz will join the Qantas Wallabies squad in Argentina ahead of the team’s final Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship clash in Mendoza on Saturday night.
Schatz will join the Wallabies in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, to replace Number 8 Ben McCalman who suffered a shoulder injury in Australia’s loss to the Springboks in Cape Town.
The Brisbane City backrower had a strong performance in the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship on Sunday, as his side defeated Bond University Queensland Country 29-13 to win the inaugural Andy Purcell Cup at Ballymore Stadium.
Speaking after the NRC match, Schatz said he was happy to be called into the squad, but he still had work to do to be selected to make his Test Rugby debut.
“I’m pretty excited and happy for the opportunity,” he said.
“To be called into the squad is an honour, but there’s a lot of hard work still to do to get a spot in the team, which is the ultimate goal.
“The NRC is a great opportunity. It keeps that competitiveness in you and keeps your skills and match fitness up.”
