McIness Wilson Lawyers Brisbane City have recorded a 37-16 win over the University of Canberra Vikings in the final round of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship.
City tallied a five tries to two, claiming a bonus-point win and securing third place ahead of the semi-finals.
Head coach Nick Stiles said he was pleased with the team’s efforts to this point.
“We’ve worked hard for each other throughout the season, so it’s good to get the reward of a semi-final.
“We knew this would be a difficult game, but I was really proud of the intensity across the park tonight.”
City began the match with plenty of possession and just as much territory thanks to a terrific Jake McIntyre kick and regather but were unable to turn pressure into points, with the final pass from Lachie Turner finding the turf rather than the hands of Matt Feaunati.
The next 15 minutes was a similar story, as the home side camped inside the Vikings half for no points reward.
Minutes later, Jack Mullins broke the points drought for City when he grounded the ball through contact.
McIntyre compounded Mullins’ effort as he swooped on a loose ball and ran 50 metres down the left hand sideline to score, opening up a 13-0 lead after 18 minutes.
The remainder of the first term was a different story, as City defended their line despite constant pressure from the Vikings.
The score remained 13-0 at half time but upon the resumption of play, the Vikings had their first points of the afternoon through flanker Jarrad Butler.
Jake Schatz returned the favour 12 minutes into the second half, as he fell over the line off the back of a strong City rolling maul.
Schatz dived over for his second with 16 minutes to play after a stellar run by Jake McIntyre which all but sealed the result.
A late try to the Vikings was small consolation, as City made sure that third place on the competition ladder was theirs after Will Genia found himself on the end of a sweeping movement towards the right hand side of the field.
Brisbane City 37 (Mullins, Schatz 2, McIntyre, Genia tries; McIntyre 3, Greene 1 con) defeated UC Vikings 16 (Butler, Alaalatoa tries) at Suncorp Stadium.
