Ardie Savea's extraordinary bombed try

Adam Federici has been the unfortunate subject of countless TV replays since his extra-time gaffe that cost Reading their FA semi against Arsenal, but the inconsolable Aussie goalkeeper could take some heart from Hurricanes flanker Ardie Savea’s Super XV howler against the Waratahs on Saturday.

Savea, the brother of superstar All Blacks winger Julian, powered away for what should have been a sensational 30-metre solo try in just the fourth minute of play…but he inexplicably botched the put-down when he planted the ball on his own foot with no Waratahs defending within five metres of him.

The blunder set the tone for the day, with the previously unbeaten Hurricanes producing passages of brilliance but coming undone via moments of lunacy – including an intercept pass thrown by Beauden Barrett on the stroke of halftime that allowed Peter Betham to level up at 19-all, before the Waratahs carved out a 29-24 upset.
