Players are encouraged to think about their future after their playing days wind up, and Cowboys, Maroons and Kangaroos linchpin Johnathan Thurston is no exception.
Footage has emerged of the brilliant playmaker helping out with the pre-flight safety instructions on a Virgin flight from Brisbane to Longreach, in full Queensland garb, during the Origin series. ‘JT’ goes pretty well in the uncustomary role, and may have found his post-career calling in the airline industry.
If Thurston has his way, he will have three opportunities to work on his skills via three return flights to Sydney during the finals series. If the Cowboys can eliminate the Broncos in Townsville on Saturday, they will travel to play either the Roosters or Penrith the following weekend. If they progress through that sudden-death encounter, North Queensland will face either Manly or Souths in the preliminary final.
Then, hopefully for the Cowboys, it’s on to ANZ Stadium on the first Sunday of October.
In all likelihood, Thurston will have another trip to Sydney booked regardless of his team’s fortunes – to collect a record-equalling third Dally M Medal, with the veteran now a short-priced favourite to win the gong ahead of Sam Burgess, Ben Hunt and Jarryd Hayne.
