Throwback Thursday takes you back to one of the foremost ‘hit of the decade’ contenders, Wests Tigers backrower Simon Dwyer’s stadium-shaker on Sydney Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in the epic 2010 qualifying final.

David ‘Cement’ Gillespie, one of the most devastating defenders of all time, praised Dwyer’s tackle, which was described by some as the best shot in more than a century of rugby league in the aftermath.

Dwyer’s defensive effort appeared to have won the match for the Tigers with a minute remaining, but the Roosters famously won the scrum against the feed and Braith Anasta equalised with an after-the-siren field goal. Shaun Kenny-Dowall’s long-range intercept try subsequently snatched a 19-15 golden point triumph.

The hulking Dwyer debuted for City Origin in 2011, but tragically the 22-year-old’s career came to an abrupt end after suffering a brachial plexus injury playing for the Tigers less than two months later.
