Next up in his NRL Recruitment Watch series, NICK TEDESCHI breaks down who the Sydney Roosters may be looking at, who they should be going after, and the areas on the roster that need shoring up for 2018.
Needs: No team in the NRL is better stocked heading into the 2018 season than the Sydney Roosters, who have added the most dangerous fullback in the premiership to a side that currently sits second on the ladder. Both wingers are off contract and Shaun Kenny-Dowall has been released, so there could be a need to pick up an outside back. They will also be looking for a little forward depth though that won’t be overly necessary.

2018 Recruits: James Tedesco
2018 Losses: Aidan Guerra, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Kane Evans, Paul Carter
Off-Contract: Blake Ferguson, Daniel Tupou, Michael Gordon, Zane Tetevano, Mitch Cornish, Chris Smith, Brenden Santi
Rumours: Most of the Roosters surrounding the Sydney Roosters have centred on players that are touted to be leaving. Michael Gordon was expected to move on following Tedesco’s signing with South Sydney and Wests Tigers were favoured for his signature, but the latest talk is he will stick around as a winger/back-up fullback Blake Ferguson was also expected to move to the Tigers but is now expected to re-sign. Daniel Tupou will stay. Boom utility Connor Watson will almost certainly go to Wests Tigers. The Roosters are supposedly set to release youngster Liam Knight. The club has been linked to Trent Hodkinson but those rumours are wide of the mark.

Players to Target: The most obvious targets for the Roosters are returning rugby union duo Marika Koroibete and Curtis Rona. How the Roosters would fit them in the cap is anybody’s guess but Nick Politis usually finds a way. Kalifa Faifai Loa is a cheaper option but one who would provide cover in the outside backs. Former Tricolours winger Joel Monaghan is off contract with Cas and could give a year’s good service if he plays on. Young forwards Jai Arrow (Brisbane) and Luke Yates (Newcastle) are two players who would come fairly cheap and add plenty of depth to the Roosters pack.
