Canberra effectively sealed an important win over Gold Coast in this bizarre passage in the 57th minute, with the Titans seemingly certain to score as injured Raiders hooker Josh Hodgson left his side’s defensive line one man short.
Despite the play running directly past the prone Hodgson, the referees refused to call a stop to proceedings and the Titans were set to take advantage of an overlap.
But the final pass from Zeb Taia – filling in at centre after Nathan Davis was carried off with a broken leg – was intercepted brilliantly by winger Brenko Lee, who ran 90 metres to score and provide the Raiders with a 20-point lead.
Typically, the Titans came home with a wet sail in the final 20 minutes of a torrid match, but the Raiders held on for a 30-22 victory.
Strapping three-quarter Lee has struggled to maintain a regular first grade position since debuting in 2014 – Sunday’s win was just his 10th NRL appearance – but he is currently making the most of injury absence of namesake Edrick Lee.
Meanwhile, the crucial away result saw Canberra remain in seventh position (soon to be sixth when Parramatta’s salary-cap penalties take effect) in a congested middle section of the ladder. The Green Machine are also tantalisingly just one point outside the top four.
