Hayne's NFL debut whips up hype here and in US

Jarryd Hayne is the talk of the sporting fraternity on both sides of the Pacific Ocean after a sensational preseason debut for the San Francisco 49ers.

The former Parramatta, NSW and Australian Rugby League star’s seemingly implausible NFL dream continues to gather momentum, making a barnstorming 53-yard run and a 33-yard kick return against the Houston Texans.

Apparently it was too much for some of the Australian journos present to handle.

But it’s not just the 27-year-old’s compatriots gushing about the debut – US experts are highly impressed as well.

The pace, power, step and fend that were hallmarks of his play in the NRL are apparently translating nicely to the NFL realm.

Hayne was understandably buzzing after his outstanding showing, but kept his cool amongst the media throng post-match.

But 49ers coach Jim Tomsula, while impressed, offered a cautious reminder that Hayne has a long way to go before he has the opportunity to rip up the astroturf in the NRL proper.
