Building up to the 2017 State of Origin series opener at Suncorp Stadium, we’re counting down the 10 greatest individual performances in Origin history.
At No.9 we have NSW centre Ryan Girdler’s record-shattering display in the 2000 dead-rubber.
The Penrith sharpshooter took a hatchet to the Origin history books in the Blues’ 56-16 game three romp, scoring a record-equalling three tries and kicking 10 goals (from as many attempts) for 32 points – both unparalleled marks.
Girdler snaffled an 40-metre intercept try to open the scoring after 15 minutes, capitalised on an in-goal error by Lockyer to grab his second 10 minutes later, and accepted a cut-out pass from captain Brad Fittler to stroll over for his hat-trick 12 minutes after halftime.
His 10th goal – from the sideline after the fulltime siren – saw him equal pioneering superstar Dally Messenger’s interstate record of 32 points in a match, achieved in 1911. Girdler also set new records for most tries (five), goals (16) and points (52) in an Origin series, while he was named Dally M Representative Player of the Year at the end of the season.
