TV and social media has been awash with brilliant footage of rugby league from the 1980s and ’90s ahead of the NRL’s Retro Round, and we’re getting in on the act for Flashback Friday with a few clips that encapsulate the spirit of a cherished era.

Firstly, we’ve got Channel Ten’s 1989 blooper reel, starring legendary commentators Rex Mossop, Graeme Hughes and Bill Anderson, along with some notable appearances from the likes of Peter Tunks, Royce Simmons and Jim Serdaris.

Next, here’s well-known St George fanatic ‘Skull’ letting everyone know about his murderous rage for Rupert Murdoch at an anti-Super League rally in 1995.

It wouldn’t be a retro selection without a bit of biff, so here’s enforcers – and former Kangaroos teammates – Paul Sironen and Les Davidson going toe-to-toe in a typically explosive Balmain-Souths clash in the late-1980s.

And what better way to finish than with a classic Toohey’s ad, featuring the Cronulla Sharks outfit. Gavin Miller, Glenn Coleman and the late, great Jack Gibson play prominent roles. “I feel like a Toohey’s!”
