Gold Coast co-captain and Test star Greg Bird has offered a contrite apology after being slapped with an infringement notice for allegedly urinating on a police car while honeymooning in Byron Bay.
The incident happened just a day after his wedding to Becky Rochow in the northern NSW town.
“I’d like to apologise to the club and its fans, anyone I may have offended (and) especially to my wife,” Bird said to the media.
Bird reiterated that he did not deliberately urinate on the police car, but in between two cars.
“It’s put a dampener on our weekend and I’m incredibly disappointed and embarrassed in myself,” he continued.
The Titans will interview Bird to determine whether to strip him of the captaincy he shares with Nate Myles, while the NRL Integrity are awaiting a full report of the incident – and the outcome of his club hearing – before deciding whether to impose further sanctions.
Bird has a well-documented history of alcohol-fuelled off-field incidents, and he indicated he will consider giving up the drink after this latest brush with the law.
A bevy of NRL stars were on hand for Bird’s nuptials, including several fellow Titans, and representative teammates Paul Gallen, Luke Lewis and Brett and Josh Morris…not too many Queenslanders, though.
