The Brisbane Broncos are commemorating their 1997 Super League Grand Final victory over Cronulla this Friday night, wearing heritage jumpers as they host the Sharks and selling tickets to the Suncorp Stadium clash for $19.97.
While the strip is one of the least liked in the Broncos’ history, the ’97 decider was certainly a watershed occasion during one of the club’s most dominant eras.
The Broncos, who had crushed the Sharks 34-2 in the major semi a fortnight earlier, powered to a 26-8 victory in the Grand Final held at Brisbane’s ANZ Stadium in front of 58,912 fans.
Cronulla, headlined by Andrew Ettingshausen, David Peachey, Mat Rogers, Paul Green and Tawera Nikau, were no much for a Brisbane side boasting 13 current or future internationals and a further two Origin players in its 17-man squad. Steve Renouf claimed man-of-the-match honours with a hat-trick of tries, which can all be relived below:
A similar result looms tomorrow when the rejuvenated Broncos meet the embattled Sharks, and while the encounter does not exactly scream crowd-puller, the bargain price tickets and the opportunity to see NSW captain Paul Gallen in a losing side may be enough to push the attendance over the 30,000-mark.
