The New Zealand Warriors’ big win over the Gold Coast Titans at Mt Smart was generally played in good spirits – until Ngani Laumape and Greg Bird had a run-in midway through the second half.
Titans enforcer and captain Bird, a notorious niggler, landed a couple of cheap elbows on blockbusting Warriors three-quarter Laumape, who swung a punch at Bird. Luckily for Laumape, he held back at the last second, grazing Bird’s chest rather than clocking him on the chin.
If memory serves us correctly, no player has been sin-binned for punching in a premiership match following the NRL’s controversial edict during last season.
Laumape, who was suspended for an ugly dangerous tackle earlier this year, has shown he is not afraid to fire up and mix it with some of the game’s most heralded hit-men. It is an attitude the Warriors side adopted as a unit on Sunday, rediscovering their aggression on both sides of the ball in a 42-0 shutout that kept their finals hopes alive.
lf you’re not on Greg Bird’s team, he adopts a ‘F*CK YOU!’ attitude. See as he calls club teammate David Taylor a ‘dumb c*nt’ live on TV in Origin II.
