Jarrod Wallace, Coen Hess, Valentine Holmes and Tim Glasby are set to make their State of Origin debuts for Queensland in Sydney next Wednesday, while Jake Trbojevic and Nathan Peats could hardly have been more impressive in their first outings for NSW in Game 1.
Commentary Box Sports is counting down the finest debut appearances in State of Origin’s 38 seasons, starting with Sydney Roosters custodian Anthony Minichiello’s stellar interstate introduction in 2003.
Minichiello was just 11 games into his tenure as Roosters fullback when he was selected in the NSW No.1 jumper, chosen to debut in game one of the ’03 series.
He made an immediate impact at the recently reopened Suncorp Stadium, combining twice with Andrew Johns to notch a first half double, while his general play at the back was outstanding. Minichiello recorded 20 runs for 227 metres in the Blues’ hard-fought 25-12 victory. His stellar representative career was interrupted by a horror run of injuries, but he nevertheless made 11 Origin appearances across nine seasons.
