Sport has a tendency to get a bit serious at this time of the year, so Flashback Friday is lightening things up by reliving Allan Border’s famous tribute match at The Gabba in 1994 – where Queensland rugby league greats Allan Langer and Paul Vautin took centre stage.

Langer, trundling in with his unthreatening medium-pacers, received a personalised drinks break courtesy of legendary Broncos trainer Kelvin Giles.

The amber fluid refreshment clearly did the trick, with ‘Alfie’ clean-bowling South African legend Barry Richards, before claiming the wicket of Wallaby superstar Tim Horan as ‘Fatty’ Vautin etched his name into sporting folklore with one of the great one-handed outfield catches.

Langer, Vautin, Wally Lewis and Jeff Thomson were the star recruits for the Allan Border XI, while the Rod Marsh-led International XI also included Peter Sterling, Dermot Brereton, David Boon, Doug Walters, Richard Hadlee, Hansie Cronje and Joel Garner.

Watch the extended clip, which shows Richards falling to Langer, Sterling getting tackled at the crease by old mate Vautin, and ‘The King’ rolling the arm over to dismiss ‘Sterlo’, caught Border.
