Du Plessis' twin pieces of fielding brilliance

It was all for nought as the Proteas crashed to a 73-run defeat in the third ODI in Canberra, but Faf du Plessis produced two stunning efforts during the final over of a long, long afternoon in the field.

Steve Smith hammered the second ball of the 50th over, bowled by Morne Morkel, and it seemed certain to clear the rope for six runs…until these outstanding acrobatics from du Plessis.

Smith hit a four off the next ball, before du Plessis took an absolute screamer of a diving catch – but Morkel had overstepped, and the no-ball call made du Plessis’ catch-of-the-summer contender redundant.

To make matters worse for the brilliant du Plessis, Smith ran two on his no-ball catch and smashed the ensuing free-hit delivery to the fence as he and Matthew Wade helped themselves to 19 runs off the last over, advancing Australia’s score to 5-329.

But du Plessis’ grab is worth standing and applauding for…or at least watching for half a dozen loops.
