AFL’S INAUGURAL WOMEN’S COMPETITION LAUNCHED

History will be made next month when the first AFL Women’s competition gets underway, with eight clubs – Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, Melbourne and Western Bulldogs – featuring in an eight-team league from February 3-March 25.

The matches will be a combination of standalone fixtures and curtain-raisers for AFL pre-season games, and represents a huge step forward for the code – and women’s sport in general.

The AFL has released a stirring promo video to launch the inaugural women’s comp, starring jockey Michelle Payne, young surfing sensation Sabre Norris, Olympic legend Cathy Freeman, SBS newsreader Lee Lin Chin, Melbourne Demons captain Nathan Jones, motivational speaker and athlete Turia Pitt, and Collingwood women’s gun Moana Hope.
