The New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers have mustered just one win between them this season, so ahead of their clash in Week 10 we thought it would be fitting for Throwback Thursday to celebrate one of the NFL’s greatest rivalries’ biggest moments.

Joe Montana’s 49ers, two-time defending Super Bowl Champs, led the 1990 NFC Championship Game 13-12 with time almost up – but the Giants had one last field goal chance to snatch a place in the big one.

Veteran kicker Matt Bahr duly slotted the 42-yard attempt to win the game and half the 49ers’ threepeat bid. It was the 33-year-old journeyman’s fifth field goal of the nail-biting showdown, with San Francisco wide receiver John Taylor notching the only touchdown of the game in the third quarter.

In the Super Bowl New York met the Buffalo Bills, who had hammered the LA Raiders 51-3 in the AFC Championship Game.

The Giants secured their second Super Bowl triumph in five years with a 20-19 victory.
