News April 10-17

We are one week away from the NFL Draft. Teams win championships through the draft which makes it vital for ownership to make the right moves when that time comes around.

But teams also win championships in other parts of the offseason.

Here is what has happened over the past week:

  • Pat Summerall, legendary NFL broadcaster, dies at 82. He will always be one of the greatest play-by-play announcers in all of sports. When you think of NFL on FOX you think of Pat Summerall
  • NFL to release regular-season schedule Thursday
  • Jay Cutler willing to play out final year of contract
  • James Harrison’s talks with Bengals “not going well”
  • Calvin Pace rejoins Jets on one-year contract
  • Giants’ Victor Cruz skips year’s first voluntary workout
  • Faith Hill, “Sunday Night Football” part ways. Not much of a big deal but she was a staple to NBC’s showing. And, also, it doesn’t hurt when she looks as good at that age
  • New Orleans Saints sign QB Seneca Wallace to one-year deal
  • Jeff Ireland: Miami Dolphins have ‘enough ammunition’ to trade up to No. 1
  • Top NFL prospect Tyrann Mathieu admits to failing more than 10 drug tests
  • Steelers match Patriots’ offer for Emmanuel Sanders. This was a must because Ben Roethlisberger would have had little to throw to if he wasn’t signed
  • Clay Matthews contract extension worth $66 million over five years
  • Vick on Eagles’ QB competition: ‘This is still my job’. It is his job, however, he has to show the ability to stay on the field while producing. He hasn’t done that in a while
  • Quarterbacks coach Steve Clarkson says he’s repaired Tim Tebow’s faulty mechanics. Here we go. I believe Tebow deserves a chance somewhere on a team that believes in him. However, who wants to take in the distraction? No team would or should take him in even as a backup because we know what type of buzz he unwillingly creates
  • Seahawks announce Antoine Winfield deal. This is a great pickup for the Seahawks as they add depth to an already solid position

Here is the latest injury news around the NFL:

  • Aaron Hernandez had minor shoulder surgery. Maybe this will be the year New England has two healthy tight ends all season long
  • Giants’ WR Nicks back at full speed following injury-plagued 2012
  • Peyton Manning says he still deals with neck issues. This isn’t great to hear but at least he’s able to work through his issues
