Illegal shift negates trick play by Johnny Football

Here’s a call that nobody expected to hear this season: “Brian Hoyer completes 37 yard pass to Johnny Manziel.”

But with Hoyer playing well enough (716 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs in 3 games) to hold off the upstart rookie from taking his job, the Browns’ coaching staff had to do something to get Johnny Football into the game.

This incredibly designed and executed trick play is something that’s generally reserved for the movies.

Manziel comes in for one down under centre and then appears to run off to the sideline, but instead of leaving the field of play he lines up as a wide receiver, totally catching the Ravens’ defence off guard.

Check it out:

Now watch it again and see how #2 lines up with his back to the formation, waiting for his coach to tell him when the ball is snapped and it’s time to run.

If only Terrance West hadn’t been flagged for an illegal shift…it’s still worth a spot in the highlight reel, but it would have been a real beauty of a play had it counted.
