The AFC’s top team took a hit today in a bit of surprising news. All-world tight end Rob Gronkowski, who’s dealt with injuries over the last few seasons, again will hit the injury wire.

After suffering a back injury earlier in the season, Gronk will now go on the injured list and get surgery on his back tomorrow.

The news is a bit of a stunner, and the Patriots have said there’s no timetable on his return.

Early medical reports list that a true surgery on the herniated disk will probably sideline Gronk until at least the postseason. And while it’s unlikely they’ll need him before then, losing him for the season would put a sizeable dent in their Super Bowl hopes.
