Canadian rapper Drake learned the hard way last weekend that you should always read the fine print whenever you sign a contract.
At the OVO Fest in Toronto, the musician not so subtly suggested to the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre crowd that a certain NBA superstar in attendance (Kevin Durant) would look good in a Raptors uniform.
He thanked the Oklahoma City Thunder forward for coming to the show and said, “I just want him to see what would happen if he came to play in Toronto.”
Immediately the crowd broke into a chant of “KD, KD.”
It’s not normally an issue for celebrities to try and woo top players to come play for their favourite team, but the problem in this case is that Drake is officially the Raptors’ brand ambassador.
Given that Durant is still under contract with OKC, the proposal constitutes tampering and the league has levied a fine of $25,000 against the team.
There’s still no word as to who will foot the bill, but given the number of $100million-plus contracts being dished out these days the Raptors can probably scrape together 25 G’s from change in their ash tray.
